As soon as we laid eyes on the Sgwd Gwladus waterfall we knew we’d be hard pressed to find anywhere more perfect for our AUTUMN shoot.
Georgi is the third of our three model finalists competing for a one year model contract with BMA models and we were thrilled that she was so up for getting stuck in with this beautiful but tricky location!
Not only was it a half hour walk with some seriously heavy kit (plus a very delicate hair & make-up on model Georgi), but what we didn’t factor in was the Welsh weather, with constant drizzle whilst we were there – we had lights covered in bin bags and brollies galore, but the location was well worth the treck & the wet socks!
We always knew that this shoot would focus on “fast fashion” and would involve some rather dark & eerie imagery to illustrate the decline of hand-made goods within the fashion industry. The vision we had for this was simple. A cloaked figure on old industry sewing machine with plumes of fabric being churned out and our model attached to it all, floating away on a smokey breeze. This was our “scamp” for the main shot which gives an inkling of what we were aiming for…
Jodi designed an amazing make-up, painting abstract lines across Georgi’s face, which complimented the bold and defined “tree like” lines within the outfit designed by Beth Brown, the third of our four finalists studying Fashion Design at Gloucestershire University.
Being a sucker for getting creative (that’s what this is all about after all) I also couldn’t help but get involved by painting a series of autumnal leaves like a tattoo up Georgi’s arm. The point of this was to connect the model and theme as one and have Georgi embody Autumn in her very presence within the location.
Beth did a fantastic job doubling-up as a photography assistant, helping to keep the rain from seeping into all our electrical equipment!
Of all the kit we had to carry, this original Singer sewing machine was the heaviest but it was really important to have the right details to create a finished image that was coherent and visually interesting.
We must also thank Kirsty for acting so well as our “hooded figure”, essential to the narrative of the shoot!
Well, we couldn’t leave smoke out of this shoot being the most atmospheric of them all – we had a man positioned both on top of the waterfall and at the bottom releasing a misty fog across the bowl of the waterfall & lake!
A massive thanks to Justin for creating what we already know will be a simply beautiful behind the scenes film of this stunning location and our model Georgi.
We had an amazing experience on this shoot and would like to thank everyone involved.
We can’t wait to release the main images & film which will be very soon – we promise!
